Skin Cancer Diagnosis & Treatments
Biopsies
Biopsies are diagnostic procedures that involve the removal of a small sample of skin tissue for examination under a microscope. This allows us to determine whether a lesion is benign or cancerous. There are different types of biopsies, including punch biopsies, shave biopsies, and excisional biopsies, each suited for specific situations. Biopsies are a crucial step in diagnosing skin cancers and guiding appropriate treatment plans. They can be performed in our clinics under local anaesthetic, by our experienced team of doctors.
Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment that involves freezing abnormal skin cells using liquid nitrogen. This technique is commonly used for precancerous lesions, such as actinic keratosis, as well as some early-stage skin cancers. The freezing process destroys the targeted cells while leaving surrounding healthy tissue intact. Patients may experience some discomfort, but cryotherapy is generally quick and can be performed in our clinics.
Topical Treatments
Topical treatments involve the application of medication directly to the skin to target specific lesions or areas affected by skin cancer. These treatments are usually a cream or gel containing chemotherapy agents or immunotherapy drugs. Topical therapies are often used for superficial skin cancers and offer a less invasive option compared to surgical procedures, making them suitable for certain patients and types of skin lesions.
Photodynamic Therapy
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a non-invasive treatment that uses a light-sensitive medication and a specialised light source to destroy abnormal cells. After applying the medication to the targeted area, the skin is exposed to light, which activates the medication and targets cancerous or precancerous cells. PDT is particularly effective for superficial skin cancers or large areas of sun damage and can help rejuvenate the skin while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. This treatment option is well-tolerated and can be performed in our clinics.
Excisions
Excisions are surgical procedures used to remove suspicious moles, skin lesions or biopsy confirmed skin cancers. The excised tissue is then sent to a laboratory for further analysis, which provides a diagnosis and confirms the complete removal of skin cancer. Excisions have the highest cure rate among skin cancer treatments and are performed in our on-site theatres under local anaesthetic. Our skilled doctors are able to perform more complex excisions such as skin grafts and flap closures.
Treatment FAQs
Do I need to stay overnight for surgery?
Surgical procedures are done under local anaesthetic and hence do not require an overnight stay.
Do I need someone to bring me?
We recommend that someone brings you to the appointment and takes you home after the procedure, especially if you are prone to feeling faint after procedures, or if you are not used to having procedures.
Will all procedures be performed on site?
All of our clinics have operating theatres, meaning almost all procedures are completed on site. For particular lesions or cases that require further referral, our Doctors will discuss this with you and arrange a referral if required.
